Exterior Modification
Exterior Modification

All exterior alterations or improvements to a property must be reviewed and approved in advance of construction by the Architectural Control Committee (ACC). Residents must submit a home improvement application describing the work to be performed. The ACC will review the request and render a decision within 30 days. If it is not approved as submitted, the ACC may provide suggestions for making changes so it can be resubmitted for approval.

To complete your application, click on Ask. Request. Submit. There you will enter all of the information needed in order for the committee to make an informed decision. Any applications dealing with the exterior appearance of the house (such as painting or roofing) must be accompanied with project details or the application might be disapproved for lack of information. Also include a plat map or survey of the property that indicates the project in conjunction with the property lines and easements when applicable.

As soon as you have gathered your information, you are ready to get started.

Visit the Community Documents page to review all of the governing documents or click Modification Guidelines.

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) provides solid waste services to the citizens of Houston through the collection, disposal and recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound and cost-effective.

Residential Garbage Collection

Currently, homes receive garbage collection service on Thursday using an Automated Garbage Collection System. Automated collection is a technologically advanced system that employs a specially fitted refuse truck. A sidearm grabs and lifts a special container dumps the garbage into the truck and returns the container to the curb. Residents participating in the program receive a 96-gallon cart from the City, specially designed for automated collection.

Automated trash collection is cleaner, safer and more efficient than traditional manual collection. In the past, the department has incurred as much as $4 million in workers’ compensation costs each year using manual garbage collection. The automated system has reduced injuries, especially back-related injuries, which are common in garbage collection.

The containers used for automated garbage collection are manufactured using 50% recycled materials. This is the highest percentage of recycled plastic used in refuse containers in the country. In fact, these containers are manufactured from plastic collected in Houston’s curbside recycling program. Tips on Residential Garbage Collection.

Tree Waste and Junk Waste Program

In alternating months, residents may dispose of their Tree Waste and Junk Waste on the 4th Thursday of each month at their curbside.

“Tree Waste” is defined as “clean” wood waste such as tree limbs, branches, and stumps (lumber, furniture, and treated wood will NOT be accepted).

“Junk Waste” is defined as items such as furniture, appliances, and other bulky material. Junk Waste may not be placed for collection during a Tree Waste month.

Automated Recycling Program

Under the Automated Recycling Program, curbside recycling service will be collected using automated collection vehicles on Thursday.

Visit the Solid Waste Management Department website for complete details and information.
