Heavy Trash Removal Suspended Indefinitely
As a reminder, the City of Houston Solid Waste Management has suspended heavy trash removal indefinitely. Since beginning debris collection on August 30th, the City of Houston along with private contractors have worked to remove what is considered the most dangerous debris after the storm. These city wide passes are expected to take up to an additional 60 days with hopes to be completed by the end of the year. Due to these recovery efforts, the solid waste management department has not authorized heavy trash removal. Any debris unrelated to storm damage or household trash will not be collected. If you have placed heavy trash curbside for removal, please refer to the City of Houston’s Solid Waste website for depository sites and how to dispose of this debris properly.

We appreciate your cooperation in the proper disposal of all debris and your understanding during this recovery time. If you have any additional questions regarding trash services, please contact the City of Houston at 713-837-0311. Visit the City of Houston Solid Waste website for updates on when heavy trash services will be reinstated.

Mayor Turner Proposes Tax Increase Public Hearing Dates

Mayor Turner Proposes Tax Increase Public Hearing Dates

As you may already know, Mayor Turner has proposed a one-year tax rate increase to help pay for Hurricane Harvey recovery. For more information on Mayor Turner’s tax proposal from the September 13th press conference, click here.

State law requires that two public hearings be held by the governing body before adopting the proposed tax rate. A third hearing is also required by Houston Code of Ordinances.

Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Davis urges you to attend and express your views at the following public hearings on the proposed tax rate increase:

  • First Hearing: Monday, September 25, 2017 6:00 pm. at Houston City Council Chambers, Houston City Hall, 901 Bagby, Houston, TX 77002
  • Second Hearing: Monday, October 2, 2017 6:00 pm. at Houston City Council Chambers, Houston City Hall, 901 Bagby, Houston, TX 77002
  • Third Hearing: Wednesday, October 11, 2017 9:00 am. at Houston City Council Chambers, Houston City Hall, 901 Bagby, Houston, TX 77002

If you wish to speak during any of these hearings dates or during public session held every Tuesday at 1:30 pm., you must sign up ahead of time with the City Secretary’s office. City Secretary can be reached at 832.393.1100 or citysecretary@houstontx.gov.

Public parking may be limited due to flood damage, so we encourage carpooling or using the Metro.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact my office at 832-393-3009 or districtb@houstontx.gov

No Recycling, No Heavy Trash

No Recycling, No Heavy Trash

Solid Waste Management has announced that there will be no recycling or heavy trash pick-up indefinitely as they continue to collect storm debris. If you would like to continue to recycle before pick-up is resumed you are welcome to use a neighborhood depository for free. A list of locations can be found here. Please be sure to bring:

            • A current Texas Driver’s License or current ID and
            • A current utility bill or city property tax receipt. Addresses and names on all presented documents must match Texas Driver’s License or ID.
              *Electronic records are NOT accepted.

To check for updates on this policy please visit their website. As a reminder, heavy trash and recyclable items may not be dumped in the dead ends of the neighborhood.

FEMA Clean and Removal Assistance

FEMA has authorized Clean and Removal Assistance (CRA) for homeowners with disaster-related real property damage that do not qualify for Home Repair Assistance because the damage did not make the house uninhabitable. Clean and Removal Assistance is awarded as a one-time payment per household. This amount represents the average cost of cleaning, sanitizing and removing carpet in a flooded dwelling in the designated area. CRA payments are part of FEMA’s Other Needs Assistance program. Applicants must register with FEMA at DisasterAssistance.gov and meet all eligibility requirements. An inspector must verify that floodwater caused the damage to at least one item in the home. If you have questions about this process please visit a Disaster Recovery Center, which can be found by entering your address into this website.
